2014 Flights of Our Fathers Fly-In

TERRELL, Texas – Vintage airplanes filled the sky above the Terrell Municipal Airport on Saturday for the 2014 Flights of our Fathers Fly-In hosted by the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum.
The all-day event was attended by thousands who were entertained by vintage airplanes flying over, military vehicles and aircraft, World War II re-enactors, radio-controlled aircraft, children's activities, a pancake breakfast hosted by the Civil Air Patrol's Black Sheep Squadron, a BBQ cook-off, food trucks, and a car and motorcycle show.

In World War II, the Terrell Municipal Airport served as the first-of-six flight schools in the United States established to train English aviators from 1941 to 1945. Before the U.S. was officially involved in the war, British pilots had to make a stop in Canada, technically leave the Royal Air Force, then enter the U.S. to train. The arrangement allowed the U.S. to be officially neutral while assisting the British as their airfields and cities were being bombed regularly by the German Luftwaffe.

The museum was established in 1987 to house, collect, and display memorabilia related to the flight training school during that time.

More than 2,000 Royal Air Force and American Army Air Force pilots were trained at the school, of them, 19 cadets died during training. In addition to the fly-in on Saturday, a memorial ceremony was held today at City of Terrell's Oakland Cemetery to honor those cadets.

The museum also showcased an aircraft of their own – an AT-6 donated to the museum in 2013 by the family of Pauline Bond Baxter named “Miss Pauline.” The aircraft is undergoing restoration at the museum.

The No.1 British Flying Training School Museum is located at 119 Silent Wings Boulevard in Terrell, Texas. For more information about the museum, visit their website at www.bftsmuseum.org.
