There are two very important differences between a Private Message (commonly referred to as a PM) and a Wall Message. A PM is sent directly to the users inbox and is PRIVATE. A Wall Message is sent to the user's wall which is PUBLIC. Unless a user's Profile Privacy Settings restrict it, everyone can view and see the message posted on the wall.

Well sort of... There are still places to type that a newbie (like I was) might think are private and you find out they aren't...
Basically ANY box that says 'Message' and also has 'Share' in front of it is NOT private.
.. and then you have the thing underneath where you can select who can see the Wall message boxes......................................... not sure they always behave as they should.

More depth please.
