Residents started showing up at 5 a.m. to cheer on THT's owners Katie Vrana and her sister Stephanie Winther as WFAA's Wyatt Goolsby interviewed Katie live. A row of 10 kids and adults held up some of the 10 most popular and interesting donuts that The Hole Thing sells, including the brand new “Pete Delkus is Hot” donut. Pete Delkus is WFAA's Chief Meteorologist and Katie Vrana said, “The secret crush started as a joke. He is cute and he is a great weatherman, so we made him a donut!” The Delkus donut was topped with Hot Tamale candy, jalapenos, red pepper flakes, and vanilla frosting. The same young man that held up the donut for the camera had no problem eating it. Pete Delkus himself will be trying the donut on the 5 p.m. news broadcast.
Katie Vrana said that she was nervous to be on camera, and relieved that it was over. She said, "We try to come up with something new all the time. Donuts don't have to be boring.” Her sister Stephanie was excited to share their donuts with a North Texas viewing audience, saying, “I think it has been amazing, the support that we've gotten from everyone.”
The shop has only been open for a little over five months, but they have a loyal customer base already. Two little girls held up signs saying “Marry Me Maple Bacon Bar” and “Scott is the Godfather of Donuts!” Scott Smith is the head baker at The Hole Thing Donuts. Forney resident Michele Hawthorne stopped in the shop to pick up three dozen specialty donuts to take to her co-workers in Richardson. She is a big fan of The Hole Thing, “The donuts are not typical and the toppings are incredibly creative. It's like a little piece of heaven right here in Forney.”
THT Donuts were also featured at the Forney Gateway Bridge groundbreaking ceremony. They catered dozens of donuts for the special event. When asked what THT does with their leftover donuts, Stephanie Winther said, “On Wednesdays and Fridays we take the extra donuts to the Layden Senior Center and we also take some of Wednesdays donuts over to the New Life Food Pantry.” They don't like to waste and it makes them happy to see the senior citizens smiling when their donuts come through the door.
