Forney Parks and Rec Board welcomes new member and hears two proposals

The Forney Parks and Recreation Board met on Wednesday night, August 22, 2012 at the Mick Spellman building in the Forney Community Park. Members of the board began the meeting by welcoming a new member to the board, Ryan Cox. The board has seen a void for several months now as new members have come in and some have left.

There were two action items on the official agenda, the first item was presented by Life Scout Sam Clark. The second item was a proposal from Sports Monster by Ryan Girardot.

Sam Clark brought the board his proposal for his Eagle Project at the Forney Community Park. Several weeks ago, Clark presented the idea of signs along the walking paths in the green belt area of the park. The signs would be of animals that are native to the area and would give a little information of the animal including its Latin and Greek systematic name. Clark also presented tiles that would be used on the presentation boards and how they would be protected from extreme weather, tampering, and designed for park and outdoor use. The board unanimously approved Sam Clarks request for his Eagle Scout Project.

The proposal from Sports Monster was presented by Ryan Girardot, a Forney High School graduate. Ryan was recently featured on inForney.com for his Shamrock Basketball Association's (SBA) commemorative driveway basketball game. Ryan co-founded SBA with High School friends and recently sold the association to Sports Monster where he now works as their National Business Development Manager. The proposal as presented is for a joint partnership with the City of Forney for adult sports leagues including but not limited to; softball, tennis, sand volleyball, basketball, kickball, flag football, and ultimate frisbee.

Sports Monster is offering the city several different partnership and revenue sharing options. The board also expressed concerns about field options and scheduling, all of which would require planning and alignment with the Community Parks master schedule. Ultimately the board chose to table the issue pending more information from the City of Forney's legal team but overall the board expressed positive emotions concerning the proposal.

Dodie Witt, the Executive Administrative Assistant, briefly mentioned the Trail of Treats and that planning is on schedule.  Click here to see more information on the Trail of Treats.
