Highland Park special-needs student left behind after football game against Forney

A Highland Park special-needs student was left in Forney, Texas, after a Friday night football game, nearly 40 minutes away from his home. The student, who is a student team manager for the Highland Park Scots football team, was later found by Forney school officials after he found his way inside the school building.
“Our coaches made the mistake of thinking that [name removed at request of Highland Park ISD] was going home with his parents,” said Highland Park Head Coach Randy Allen in an email to Forney ISD officials. The incident took place after the Highland Park and Forney High School football game on September 26, 2013.

The student, whose age has not been provided, was found after the Highland Park buses left Forney's City Bank Stadium. He was reportedly found between approximately 11:15 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. before the Forney High School coaching staff left the athletic facilities at the end of the night.

The student was found by Forney High School Head Coach and Athletic Director Kevin Rush. Coach Rush loaded the student into his car and began driving to Highland Park to drop off the student. “Coach Rush wouldn't take anything for using his own gas, vehicle and time to do a kind act for our manager,” states Allen in the email. “While driving [the student] to HP [Highland Park], Coach Rush got to know the young man and had a good conversation with him.”

Forney ISD Athletics policy requires any parent wishing to take their student directly from any athletic event instead of riding the district's bus or other method of transportation to sign a student release form. It is unclear if Highland Park has the same policy measures in place and if they were followed prior to the buses leaving Forney.

A call from inForney.com to Highland Park's Communications Department has not yet been returned at the time of publishing.

Allen concluded his email by writing, "This act of kindness by Coach Rush was way above the call of duty. I am indebted to him. He is a Coach of the Year in my book!"
