Change of venue motion granted in Eric Williams trial

A motion for a change of venue in the Eric Williams capital murder trial was granted this morning, January 24, 2014, by visiting Dallas County District Judge Mike Snipes at the Kaufman County Courthouse just before 9 a.m.
Williams' defense team filed the motion in late October 2013 citing media coverage which made it difficult for Williams to receive a fair trial in Kaufman County. The trial, which is now set for October 20, 2014, will take place in Rockwall County.

Williams, a former Kaufman County Justice of the Peace, and his wife Kim are both being held in the Kaufman County Jail and indicted for the capital murders of Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse, Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland, and his wife Cynthia McLelland last year.

According to authorities, the couple allegedly plotted and then killed Hasse and the McLellands after they prosecuted Eric Williams for theft and burglary of a building by a public servant in 2011 which resulted in Williams losing his justice of the peace seat and his law license.

Special prosecutors Bill Wirskye and Toby Shook have said they will seek the death penalty for Eric Williams.
