A stretch of Highway 34 remained impacted Thursday afternoon after a Texas Department of Transportation heavy truck caught fire, prompting a rapid response from local emergency personnel.
The Terrell Volunteer Fire Department received the call at 12:02 p.m. and arrived at the scene near County Road 320 within seven minutes. Upon arrival, crews discovered the TxDOT vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters initiated an aggressive suppression effort immediately, bringing the blaze under control within 15 minutes of their arrival. No injuries were reported to the public, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
To ensure the safety of responders and manage visibility concerns caused by heavy smoke, authorities closed Highway 34 in both directions during the peak of the firefighting operation.
While the fire has been extinguished, recovery efforts are ongoing. TxDOT personnel are currently managing traffic at the site, utilizing a one-lane alternating configuration as wreckers work to clear the damaged vehicle and address diesel fuel resulting from the incident.
